God Hears Israel's Groaning

23 (A)During those many days the king of Egypt died, and the people of Israel (B)groaned because of their slavery and cried out for help. (C)Their cry for rescue from slavery came up to God. 24 And (D)God heard their groaning, and God (E)remembered his covenant with (F)Abraham, with Isaac, and with Jacob. 25 God (G)saw the people of Israel—and God (H)knew.

The Burning Bush

Now Moses was keeping the flock of his father-in-law, Jethro, the priest of Midian, and he led his flock to the west side of the wilderness and came to Horeb, the (I)mountain of God. (J)And (K)the angel of the Lord appeared to him in a flame of fire out of the midst of a bush. He looked, and behold, the bush was burning, yet it was not consumed. And Moses said, “I will turn aside to see this great sight, why the bush is not burned.” When the Lord saw that he turned aside to see, (L)God called to him (M)out of the bush, “Moses, Moses!” And he said, “Here I am.” Then he said, “Do not come near; (N)take your sandals off your feet, for the place on which you are standing is holy ground.” And he said, (O)“I am the God of your father, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob.” And Moses hid his face, for (P)he was afraid to look at God.

Then the Lord said, (Q)“I have surely seen the affliction of my people who are in Egypt and have heard their cry because of their (R)taskmasters. I know their sufferings, and (S)I have come down to deliver them out of the hand of the Egyptians and (T)to bring them up out of that land to a (U)good and broad land, a land (V)flowing with milk and honey, to the place of (W)the Canaanites, the Hittites, the Amorites, the Perizzites, the Hivites, and the Jebusites. And now, behold, (X)the cry of the people of Israel has come to me, and I have also seen the (Y)oppression with which the Egyptians oppress them. 10 (Z)Come, I will send you to Pharaoh that you may bring my people, the children of Israel, out of Egypt.” 11 But Moses said to God, (AA)“Who am I that I should go to Pharaoh and bring the children of Israel out of Egypt?” 12 He said, (AB)“But I will be with you, and this shall be the sign for you, that I have sent you: when you have brought the people out of Egypt, (AC)you shall serve God on this mountain.”

13 Then Moses said to God, “If I come to the people of Israel and say to them, ‘The God of your fathers has sent me to you,’ and they ask me, ‘What is his name?’ what shall I say to them?” 14 God said to Moses, “I am who I am.”[a] And he said, “Say this to the people of Israel: (AD)I am has sent me to you.’” 15 God also said to Moses, “Say this to the people of Israel: ‘The Lord,[b] the (AE)God of your fathers, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob, has sent me to you.’ This is (AF)my name forever, and thus I am to be remembered throughout all generations. 16 Go and (AG)gather the elders of Israel together and say to them, ‘The Lord, the God of your fathers, the God of Abraham, of Isaac, and of Jacob, has appeared to me, saying, (AH)“I have observed you and what has been done to you in Egypt, 17 and I promise that (AI)I will bring you up out of the affliction of Egypt to the land of the Canaanites, the Hittites, the Amorites, the Perizzites, the Hivites, and the Jebusites, a land (AJ)flowing with milk and honey.”’ 18 And (AK)they will listen to your voice, and you and the elders of Israel (AL)shall go to the king of Egypt and say to him, ‘The Lord, the God of the Hebrews, has (AM)met with us; and now, please let us go a three days' journey into the wilderness, that we may sacrifice to the Lord our God.’ 19 But I know that the king of Egypt (AN)will not let you go unless compelled (AO)by a mighty hand.[c] 20 So (AP)I will stretch out my hand and strike Egypt with (AQ)all the wonders that I will do in it; (AR)after that he will let you go.

Jesus Foretells His Death a Third Time

32 (A)And they were on the road, going up to Jerusalem, and (B)Jesus was walking ahead of them. And (C)they were amazed, and those who followed were afraid. And taking the twelve again, he began to tell them what was to happen to him, 33 saying, “See, (D)we are going up to Jerusalem, and the Son of Man will be delivered over to the chief priests and the scribes, and they will (E)condemn him to death and (F)deliver him over to the Gentiles. 34 And they will (G)mock him and (H)spit on him, and flog him and kill him. And (I)after three days he will rise.”

The Request of James and John

35 (J)And James and John, (K)the sons of Zebedee, came up to him and said to him, “Teacher, we want you to do for us (L)whatever we ask of you.” 36 And he said to them, (M)“What do you want me to do for you?” 37 And they said to him, “Grant us (N)to sit, one at your right hand and one at your left, (O)in your glory.” 38 Jesus said to them, (P)“You do not know what you are asking. Are you able (Q)to drink the cup that I drink, or (R)to be baptized with the baptism with which I am baptized?” 39 And they said to him, “We are able.” And Jesus said to them, (S)“The cup that I drink (T)you will drink, and with the baptism with which I am baptized, (U)you will be baptized, 40 but to sit at my right hand or at my left is not mine to grant, (V)but it is for those for whom it has been (W)prepared.” 41 And when the ten heard it, they began to be indignant at James and John. 42 (X)And Jesus called them to him and said to them, “You know that those who are considered rulers of the Gentiles (Y)lord it over them, and their great ones exercise authority over them. 43 But (Z)it shall not be so among you. But whoever would be great among you must be your servant,[a] 44 and whoever would be first among you must be (AA)slave[b] of all. 45 For even the Son of Man came not to be served but (AB)to serve, and (AC)to give his life as a ransom for (AD)many.”
